Garry Thompson had to miss Scunthorpe’s pre-season match with Grimsby at the weekend but Nigel Adkins hopes that he will be fit for the League One opener on Saturday.

Thompson, who signed from Morecambe this summer, had to sit out the win over Grimsby having picked up an injury on Monday, but although the Iron boss says he will not rush him back he does hope he will be fit: ‘He picked up the injury last Monday in one of the weight sessions, ‘ Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside. ‘There’s no way we were going to risk him and he’s doing rehab work.’

Scunthorpe begin the League One programme with a home match against Leeds on Saturday.

How much do you think Garry Thompson would be missed if he did have to sit out the season’s opener?
