Veteran forward Burton hit four goals in as many games in the month, having only managed one competitive strike in the opening three months of the season.

They were all vital goals, with two against Morecambe sealing a 2-0 win and the opening goal setting the Iron up for a 2-0 win at promotion rivals Oxford.

His goal at Wycombe would also have been a winning one had Leon Johnson not levelled for the home side in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Wilcox said: ‘This individual award represents how well the team have done during December.

‘His overall performances, not just his goals, have helped us to top spot in League Two.’

Sky Sports’ football League pundit Don Goodman said: ‘Burton’s ability to hold up the ball and bring team mates into the game has been just as effective as his goalscoring in December.

‘He seems to be benefitting from Russ Wilcox’s more refined style of play and has repaid his manager with a sterling month.’

Wilcox was nominated for the manager of the month honour, but missed out to Cheltenham’s Mark Yates.

He was caretaker boss for most of the month – being confirmed as Brian Laws’ permanent successor on Christmas Eve – and oversaw two wins and two draws.

Yates guided Chetlenham to three wins, one draw and one loss in the same period.
