The 22-year-old was out of contract this summer and did not feature in the Iron’s future first-team plans, but he was offered a new deal to ensure the club were entitled to compensation as he is under 24.

‘With his Scunthorpe United contract set to expire this summer, the club sat down to discuss new terms with the forward three weeks ago in the knowledge that a number of other clubs were interested in acquiring his services,’ the club said in a statement.

‘The club offered him a deal which maintained compensation rights and also detailed to Matt and his agent what we’d be prepared to accept should another club be interested in taking him.

‘Matt has spoken to a number of other clubs and Ebbsfleet have agreed our compensation proposal and agreed terms with the player.’

Godden was a highly-rated youngster at Glanford Park, but struggled to make the breakthrough into the first-team and made just 19 appearances – with a string of loan appearances to non-league sides bringing his only goals.
