Garry Thompson, who is out of contract this summer, looks as though his future will be away from Glanford Park.

Alan Knill knows exactly what the striker can do but, as he told the official website, knows that the club need to make sure that they are getting ‘value for money’ from players and his injury record tends to suggest that would not be the case: ‘we’re all well aware of what Garry Thompson can do.

‘With any player, you’re looking at value for money. You want your players to play at least 30 games a season.

‘I’m no different to any other manager. We’re not going to have a big squad and we need players to be fit all the time. Sometimes you can’t help it, but what we’re looking at is for players to be as fit as possible all the time.

‘To be fair to Garry, he’s been fit for most of the season. He had a good pre-season and then had a slight groin problem, but it wasn’t the same [injury as the one which ruled him out for most of last season] and then something else.

‘He’s been fitter this season than last year though.’

The indication is that the 31-year-old could well be playing his last game for the club this weekend?
