McNulty confident of Iron survival

Recently signed on loan from Brighton, the Liverpudlian defender is confident that he and his teamates will be above the Championship trap door come the end of May.

As he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph;

‘I definitely think we can stay up again,’

This is despite the Iron losing the likes of Paul Hayes, Grant McCann & Marcus Williams: but it appears that McNulty has been sufficiently impressed by the quality of the replacements that he believes survival is a very achievable goal;

‘I know the lads, I know the names and the characters, even though a few good players, important players, have gone.

‘But the manager has brought in some quality and I have got to get to know them as well now.’

For the club’s sake you definitely hope that Jim is right: although it does make you wonder how somebody who couldn’t get in an average League One side is in any position to be able to judge what’s required to stave off relegation from the Championship.

But credit to him: he is very honest about why he feels he wasn’t a success at Brighton;

‘I personally think the timing wasn’t right for me at Brighton,’

‘I got injured with a pretty serious injury and then the new manager came in and brought in his own left-back.

‘It was his signing and he played him ahead of me, so from then on it was pretty difficult for me.’

Perhaps it’s no surprise given all the above, that he also appeared very relieved that his protracted transfer to North Lincolnshire finally came to an end with a satisfactory result;

‘The loan happened in the end and although there were times when I didn’t think it was going to, we got there.’

You just hope for everyone’s sake that he’s right, and that McNulty can be a vital part of the team Adkins & his team have built to survive at this level once more.
