Scunthorpe opened the League One campaign in pretty dire fashion this weekend with a two one defeat at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium but it was also a game that sees us without three players for the next match.

A less than impressed manager told the Official Site at full time that he felt we had gifted them both goals and the win on the day as he knows we are a lot better than that showing suggests.

‘We`ve gifted them their two goals today. We`ve always got goals in us and in fairness, we are better than we`ve showed. I`m not taking anything from Burton as they`ve worked their socks off and they left their mark on us. For me, it`s disappointing to lose the two players because they`re going to be out for months rather than weeks. Luke Williams has come off with a knee problem. He`s gone down under a heavy challenge while Niall landed funny from a jump and tore the ligaments in his ankle. That`s two injuries we could well have done without.’

Robins went on to say that with two players picking up injuries and the dismissal of goalkeeper Luke Daniels it became a very ‘expensive day’ for us on that score.

‘We`ve worked all summer, working in a certain way and they`ve been good and fit into the system and we were looking forward to a really good and assured performance; but we didn`t get that assured performance. We know we are better than that. It`s game one, it`s day one and there were 1,100 supporters here today who we wanted to give a real good show – and it`s not been that. The supporters have been brilliant today and I`ve got to thank them for that.’

Robins did say however that despite the gloom and frustration there were positives to take such as Charlie Goode grabbing his first goal and some promising debuts on the day as well, but now we have to go into the Capital One Cup game against Barnsley looking for a response.

‘We needed to get our foot on the ball a little bit more and that confidence will come. We will be fine this season, there`s no doubt, we have just got to be better than we have been today.’

As for Daniels specifically, the gaffer admits he let us down with his actions.

‘He`s let us down. He`s let himself down. We`ve conceded a penalty on the back of it, whereas we needn`t have lost the game. It was a sending off. He was fouled on the way out after getting the ball, but his reaction wasn`t right. He knows how I feel and he`s obviously apologetic to everybody.’

Daniels now misses the next three matches with suspension – Barnsley, and the League One games against Crewe and Wigan.
