The 2015/16 season got underway for Scunthorpe, as it did the remainder of League 1 at the weekend, with this starting in defeat against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Hardly an ideal start for the Iron, whereas for former Dutch international Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and his Brewers a first match at this level couldn’t have been better could it with a two-one win secured!

After a goalless first half Burton went ahead through the experienced Beavon (55) with a penalty award, with Iron ‘keeper Daniel lashing out and also being sent off, giving the home side the chance to double this advantage, Akins (72) making no mistake.

Scunthorpe got a goal back but Goode’s (90) injury-time goal was nothing more than a consolation with Mark Robins now looking to pick his Iron side up to go again.

The other results this weekend were as follows:-

Burton 2-1 Scunthorpe
Chesterfield 3-1 Barnsley
Colchester 2-2 Blackpool
Coventry 2-0 Wigan
Crewe 0-0 Port Vale
Doncaster 1-1 Bury
Fleetwood 1-1 Southend
Gillingham 4-0 Sheff Utd
Rochdale 2-0 Peterborough
Shrewsbury 1-2 Millwall
Swindon 4-1 Bradford
Walsall 1-1 Oldham

In the opening round of fixtures you can’t really read too much, if anything into this, and things aren’t likely to settle down for several weeks if not months and only around the end of the year, at best, can you gage more from the table really, correct? It goes without saying the Iron will be looking to be higher up this table than down it though!

Looking at these results the ones that stand out are Chesterfield’s, Gillingham’s and Swindon’s wins.

Barnsley are fancied by many to do well whereas the Spireites, having lost manager Paul Cook to Portsmouth and several key players, are being tipped by some to struggle but Chesterfield gained an impressive three-one win at the Proact Stadium with Swindon’s all-changed squad ripping into Phil Parkinson’s Bradford, seeing off the FA Cup ΒΌ finalists from last season four-one at the County Ground!

Arguably the result of the weekend, certainly in League 1, has to be Justin Edinburgh’s Gillingham side thrashing one of the hot favourites for the title, let alone promotion, Sheffield United four-nil at Priestfield in Nigel Adkins’ first match in charge of the Blades.

The Iron are back in action this midweek with the 1st round of the Capital One Cup taking place.

League 1 rivals Barnsley provide the Scunthorpe opponents on Tuesday at Glanford Park as both sides look to bounce back from opening day defeats to book a place in the second round of the League Cup, something Robins will be keen on.
