Okay, so it isn’t for on field performances, nor are the Iron the only club to win. But an award is an award, and Scunthorpe have now got ‘The Football League Family Excellence Award’ for 2011.

A staggering 47 clubs from across all three tiers of The Football League have been handed the award this season. And is the second time the Iron have won.

Football League Chairman, Greg Clarke, said: ‘The Football League Family Excellence Award provides clubs with a benchmark in their efforts to attract families through their gates.

‘It is hugely encouraging to see that the number of clubs receiving the accolade is at its highest ever level, demonstrating The Football League’s commitment to securing the next generation of fans.’

The judges were particularly impressed with the efforts clubs are making to ensure away travel is more attractive for families, with away family areas ensuring they can enjoy the match in a dedicated, safe, welcoming and entertaining environment.

This has made it an interesting past week for the Iron’s off the field efforts as well – with Michael Raynes: sponsored by Vital Scunthorpe no less nominated for the Football League in the Community player of the year.

This was owing to all the absolutely fantastic work that Michael has done recently in helping the club and the community in helping the Dylan’s Dream project and its fundraising.

And it truly is brilliant for the club to be able to show just how caring and helpful something like a football club can be: especially when it’s trying to give something back to a community.

Well done Scunthorpe United: and especially Michael Raynes!
